You want me to pay YOU to be nagged about my subscriptions?

by JSH

This is a valid question–one that a prospective customer asked just the other day. The simple answer is:

You should save way more money by paying for Mindery than it costs to be a Mindery subscriber.

Let’s walk through some real-world data.

In our Introducing Mindery article, we show this screenshot from my Amazon Prime list of paid streaming subscriptions.

My wife and I knew we had signed up for a few trials during the past few years, but we had no idea we were spending nearly $90 per month (in addition to the base price of our $139/year (US) Amazon Prime subscription). Wow!

Obviously we didn’t need Mindery to discover this, but we looked this stuff up because I was building Mindery and testing out the onboarding process. I have a pretty good idea that we are not alone here. Who really wants to spend a bunch of time figuring out how they spend their money?

As the team continued to iterate on Mindery features, my wife and I took a look at other places we pay for subscriptions, and what we found (and cancelled) was an eye-opener:

This adds up to real money. Not everyone spends this kind of money, and we are grateful that we can (mostly) afford it. Some people spend multiples of these amounts on subscriptions; I am happy for them if they can afford it.

Notice that we didn’t cancel any of the streaming subscriptions from that first list. In fact, the two items in red show that we are actually paying more now. We did consider some cancellations, but after talking about our priorities, we concluded that, for now, paying for that content is spending we want keep going.

Even if you eliminate the Massage Envy and WP Engine as outliers, this is $135 per month in savings–or $1,620 US saved per year.

$135 per month in savings just from the Mindery onboarding process

Keep in mind that this isn’t the last time we will look at (and think carefully about) our subscription spending.

  • The core value of Mindery is the core idea: Ongoing reminders about subscriptions (and other things we want to remember).

We chose to receive Mindery alerts every month for the monthly subscriptions we kept, so this will remind us to think about our choices every month.

Why Pay for Any Subscription?

All this number-crunching and thinking does remind me that the question that prompted this article is truly THE question to ask about any subscription:

Am I getting more value from this than I am spending for it?

If your answer becomes “No” for a given subscription, we recommend you cancel that–even if it is Mindery.

We have made our introductory pricing low enough that you can easily give yourself a year to thoroughly assess the value you are seeing, and we plan to make sure that value increases during that time.

Welcome!
